Founding and History

Baylor University was chartered in 1845 by the Republic of Texas, making it the oldest continuously operating university in Texas. It was founded by the Union Baptist Association under the leadership of Judge R.E.B. Baylor, a former U.S. Congressman and Texas Supreme Court Justice, along with Rev. William Milton Tryon and Rev. James Huckins. Its original location was in Independence, Texas, but it moved to Waco in 1886.

Baylor has maintained its Baptist heritage while becoming a nationally recognized research institution. It remains affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas but operates independently under its own board of regents.
