The Greshams lived in the house until 1923 when it was sold to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Galveston.

Role as a Diocesan Residence: The mansion served as the residence of the Catholic bishops of Galveston for nearly three decades. Bishop Christopher E. Byrne lived there until 1950, after which the building went through a series of owners. The Diocese of Galveston opened it to the public in 1963 to preserve its history and share its architectural beauty with the public.

Preservation: In 2013, the Galveston Historical Foundation took over the ownership of Bishop’s Palace. The foundation has since been dedicated to maintaining and restoring the property, preserving it for future generations. Several restoration projects have been carried out, including repairs to the roof and conservatory.
