Henry Morrison Flagler Museum, Palm Beach, USA Florida, North America
The Henry Morrison Flagler Museum, located in Palm Beach, Florida, is a National Historic Landmark housed in Whitehall, the former winter estate of Henry Flagler, a key figure in the development of Florida's east coast and one of the wealthiest men of the Gilded Age. The museum is a tribute to Flagler’s vision and legacy, offering visitors a glimpse into the grandeur of the Gilded Age and Flagler’s own life.
History of the Museum
Whitehall was completed in 1902 and designed by the architectural firm Carrère and Hastings in the Beaux-Arts style. The mansion was intended to be a winter retreat for Flagler and his wife, Mary Lily Kenan, and was built as a grand symbol of their wealth and status. At the time of its completion, the New York Herald described the mansion as "more wonderful than any palace in Europe, grander and more magnificent than any other private dwelling in the world."
After Flagler’s death in 1913, the estate remained in the Flagler family until it was sold in 1959. In 1959, the mansion was donated to the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum, which opened to the public as a museum in 1960. Today, the museum is a key historical and cultural site in Palm Beach, offering insights into the early development of Florida and showcasing the life and legacy of Henry Flagler.
