Located in the heart of Rancho Mirage in the Coachella Valley, it stands out as a civic treasure unlike any other in California.

Library Overview

Opened in 2006, the library spans over 40,000 square feet and serves as a regional hub for literature, learning, and community programs. The collection includes:

Over 80,000 items including books, audiobooks, DVDs, and digital media.

A wide array of e-books and online learning resources.

Special collections with local interest, historical archives, and rare publications.

The interior design is welcoming and modern, featuring high ceilings, comfortable reading areas, study rooms, and a large community room used for events and lectures. Wi-Fi and public computers are also available.

Cultural Programming

The library hosts dozens of events each month, including:

Author presentations and literary discussions

Film screenings and live music

Children's story hours, craft programs, and STEAM-based educational activities

Teen programs including creative writing workshops, gaming events, and volunteer opportunities

Community talks with local historians, scientists, and civic leaders

A major highlight is the Rancho Mirage Writers Festival, one of the top literary festivals on the West Coast, which brings acclaimed authors, historians, and journalists to speak and interact with audiences.

Rancho Mirage Observatory

Inaugurated in 2018, the observatory is a state-of-the-art facility that makes professional astronomy accessible to the public. It is connected to the library via a short landscaped walkway and includes:

A 27.5-inch PlaneWave CDK700 telescope, capable of capturing distant galaxies and nebulae tens of millions of light-years away.

A 22.5-foot rotating Ash Dome, housing the telescope, which opens during nighttime viewings.

An outdoor observation deck with pads for portable telescopes and public stargazing.

Remote observation technology and digital displays for astrophotography and educational tours.

The observatory is staffed by an on-site astronomer who leads tours, lectures, and free public stargazing nights several times each month. These events allow people of all experience levels to learn about stars, planets, and deep-space phenomena in a hands-on environment.

Accessibility and Inclusivity

In 2023, the Library and Observatory became a Certified Autism Center, offering:

Trained staff equipped to assist guests with autism and other sensory sensitivities

Sensory bags with fidget toys, headphones, and visual cue cards

Quiet areas and clearly marked signage for easy navigation
