Bialla is a town located in the West New Britain Province of Papua New Guinea. It serves as the administrative center of the Bialla Rural Local-Level Government (LLG), which encompasses various wards like Baia, Noau, and Ubili. The town is situated approximately 100 kilometers (63 miles) north of Kimbe, the provincial capital.

Geography

Bialla is surrounded by natural beauty, with lush tropical landscapes and proximity to Mount Ulawun, one of the world’s most active and hazardous volcanoes. It is also close to the Tiauru River, which was historically an important water source for the community.

Infrastructure and Development

In recent years, Bialla has seen improvements in infrastructure. Notably, in 2020, the town became the first remote settlement in Papua New Guinea to install a water supply system under a World Bank-supported project. This has significantly improved the living conditions for the local population, providing access to clean and safe drinking water.

Economy

The local economy is largely based on agriculture, with palm oil being a significant industry. The presence of palm oil plantations has spurred economic activity, and the area has attracted migrants in search of work, boosting population growth.

Tourism and Attractions

Bialla and its surrounding areas have some notable attractions:

  • Kerosene Wara: A natural pool with clear blue waters, this location is popular among visitors and offers a scenic spot for relaxation.
  • Aliu River: The river offers picturesque views and opportunities for exploration, making it another attraction in the region.

Bialla remains an important part of West New Britain, blending natural beauty with emerging infrastructure and economic growth.
