Taitua Arboretum is a peaceful and scenic tree sanctuary located just 10 km southwest of Hamilton, New Zealand. Covering 20 hectares, it features an extensive collection of native and exotic trees, open pastures, tranquil walking trails, and beautiful duck ponds. The arboretum is a popular destination for nature lovers, walkers, and families looking for a relaxing outdoor experience.

1. History of Taitua Arboretum

Taitua Arboretum was developed by John and Bunny Mortimer, who began planting trees on their farmland in the 1970s. Over time, the land evolved into a lush forest-like environment with a diverse range of trees and plants. In 1997, the Mortimers gifted the arboretum to Hamilton City Council so that the public could enjoy it permanently. Since then, it has been free to visit and open to all.

2. Walking Tracks and Features

The arboretum offers several interconnected walking tracks, totaling about 2 km in length. These trails wind through forested areas, open spaces, and around ponds, making it an ideal place for a leisurely walk.

Key Features:

  • Diverse Tree Collection – Over 1,500 species of native and exotic trees, including oaks, redwoods, and kauri.
  • Tranquil Ponds – Home to ducks, geese, and other birdlife.
  • Scenic Lookouts – Benches and open areas provide picturesque views of the trees and hills.
  • Bridges and Wooden Walkways – Adding to the natural charm of the arboretum.
  • Sheltered Picnic Areas – Perfect for relaxing in a peaceful setting.

The trails are easy to walk, making them suitable for families, elderly visitors, and casual walkers. However, the pathways are not fully wheelchair accessible due to some uneven terrain.

3. Wildlife and Birdwatching

Taitua Arboretum is a haven for native birds, including:

  • Tūī – Known for their distinctive calls and song.
  • Fantails (Pīwakawaka) – Small, friendly birds that often follow visitors along the trails.
  • Kererū (New Zealand wood pigeon) – Large and often seen perched in the trees.

The combination of forests, open spaces, and water sources creates an ideal environment for birdwatching.
