Al-Himma Hot Springs, Irbid, Jordan, Asia
Al-Himma Hot Springs is a thermal bath complex located in the Yarmouk River Valley, approximately 30 kilometers north of Irbid, Jordan. It is situated on the northern border, directly adjacent to the Yarmouk River and the Golan Heights.
Visual Characteristics
The site features several outdoor and indoor concrete pools filled with mineral-rich, steaming water. The surrounding landscape consists of steep, jagged limestone cliffs and lush riparian vegetation including tall reeds and palm trees. The water is characterized by a high sulfur content, often emitting a distinct odor and appearing clear with a slight blue tint in the deeper basins.
Location & Access Logistics
Access is via the Al-Shuna al-Shamalyya road (Route 65), continuing north toward the border zone. The site is approximately 120 kilometers from Amman; visitors must pass through a military checkpoint to enter the Al-Himma area, requiring a valid ID or passport. Public minibuses run from Irbid to North Shuna, where local taxis provide the final 10-kilometer transfer to the springs.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The springs are geologically fed by deep-seated hydrothermal vents associated with the Dead Sea Transform fault system. Known in antiquity as Amatha, the site was developed during the Roman period as a renowned healing center and was frequented by Byzantine and Umayyad elites. The water emerges from the earth at temperatures ranging from 35°C to 40°C, containing high concentrations of chloride, carbonate, and sulfur.
Key Highlights & Activities
Therapeutic bathing in the sulfurous waters is the primary activity, with separate facilities available for men and women. Visitors can explore the remains of the ancient Roman baths located near the modern complex. The riverbanks adjacent to the springs provide areas for picnicking and observing the unique valley topography.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The facility includes basic changing rooms, restrooms, and several small indoor private baths. Shade is provided by built concrete structures and large eucalyptus trees surrounding the pool areas. 4G cellular signal is available but frequently connects to international roaming networks; several small kiosks and local restaurants selling water and snacks are located immediately outside the facility entrance.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit is during the winter and spring months (November to April) when the ambient air temperature is cool enough to enjoy the hot water. Photography is best in the early morning (08:00 to 10:00) before the humidity and steam from the pools become too dense. The springs are typically open daily from 08:00 to 20:00.
Facts & Legends
Ancient historical records indicate that the philosopher Iamblichus visited these springs and claimed to have summoned the spirits of Eros and Anteros from the steaming waters. A verified historical oddity is that the site was once a stop on the branch line of the Hejaz Railway, and remains of the old stone railway bridge are still visible nearby.
