Barahakshetra Temple is one of the four most sacred Hindu pilgrimages in Nepal, located in the Sunsari District at the confluence of the Sapta Koshi and Koka rivers.

Visual Characteristics

The temple features a prominent white-washed pagoda-style architecture with intricate wood carvings. It is situated on the banks of the massive Koshi River, surrounded by dense forests and hills. The complex includes several smaller shrines dedicated to various deities and stone steps (ghats) leading down to the river for ritual bathing.

Location & Access Logistics

Address: Barahakshetra 56703, Nepal.

Access: Located approximately 20 km west of Dharan.

Road: Reachable by jeep or bus from Dharan or Itahari. The road follows the ridge of the hills and the riverbank.

Water: Historically, pilgrims used boats to reach the site, though road access is now primary.

Hours: Daily 05:30 – 19:30.

Historical & Ecological Origin

According to the Varaha Purana, this is the site where Lord Vishnu took the form of Varaha (a boar) to rescue the Earth (Prithvi) from the demon Hiranyaksha. The site is geographically significant as it sits where the Sapta Koshi river exits the Himalayan foothills and enters the Terai plains.

Key Highlights & Activities

Varaha Avatar Shrine: The main idol depicts Vishnu in his boar incarnation.

Confluence Bathing: Devotees believe that bathing at the junction of the Koka and Koshi rivers washes away sins and grants salvation.

Makar Sankranti: The largest religious fair (Mela) occurs here in January, attracting hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from Nepal and India.

Kartik Purnima: Another major festival period where the temple is extensively decorated.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Dharamshalas: Basic lodging facilities are available for pilgrims within the temple complex.

Local Market: Small stalls sell religious offerings (Puja Samagri), local handicrafts, and snacks.

Connectivity: Mobile signal (Ncell/NTC) is generally available, though stability fluctuates due to the hilly terrain.

Best Time to Visit

November – March: Best weather conditions for travel and photography.

January: For the Makar Sankranti festival (high crowds).

Facts & Legends

A verified geological feature is the presence of ancient fossils in the riverbed, similar to the Shaligrams found in the Kali Gandaki. Legend holds that the Lord, after killing the demon, rested at this spot, making the entire area "holy ground." It is technically one of the oldest recorded pilgrimage sites in the Puranas.

Nearby Landmarks

Dharan City – 20 km East.

Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve – Located downstream to the Southwest.

Chatara Dham – A major religious site located a few kilometers away, known for hosting the Kumbh Mela.
