Brookgreen Gardens, a nationally recognized sculpture garden, botanical showcase, and wildlife preserve, is located in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, on acreage of land along the coast that blends art, history, nature, with this sprawling estate.
One of the top cultural attractions in the Southeast is held by this National Historic Landmark.History and Founding. In 1931, Anna Hyatt Huntington and her partner Archer established the gardens.
Wealthy philanthropist Archer and famous sculptor Anna bought four former rice plantations that covered more than 9 000 acres.
The goal was to develop a setting that showcased American figurative sculpture while safeguarding the Lowcountry's indigenous plants and animals.Layout and Setting. Several significant sections of the property are:Over 2,000 pieces by American sculptors are on display at the main attraction, with many of them being integrated into fountains, courtyards or landscaped terrace areas.Designed in a sequence of themed areas such as seasonal flower beds, live oak allées, butterfly gardens and formal plantings.Natural habitat: The Lowcountry Zoo is a zoo and home to native species, including river otters, red foxes, alligators...A walking trail through rice fields and marshland preserves the Lowcountry Trail and Interpretive Center, which features displays on Gullah culture, rice production methods (poaching), and other regional history.Art and Sculpture Highlights.
