Cagsawa Ruins, Legazpi, Philippines, Asia
Cagsawa Ruins is a historical landmark in Daraga, Albay, featuring the remains of an 18th-century Franciscan church. It is the most iconic vantage point for viewing Mayon Volcano.
Visual Characteristics
The site is defined by the stone belfry of the former Cagsawa Church, which stands as the only visible structure above ground. The surrounding area is a park with manicured lawns, stone pathways, and the ruins of the church's foundation. The backdrop is dominated by the near-perfect cone of Mayon Volcano.
Location & Access Logistics
The ruins are located in Barangay Busay, Daraga, Albay.
Access: Situated approximately 5 kilometers northwest of Legazpi City.
Transport: Reachable via a 15-minute tricycle or jeepney ride from the Legazpi city center or Daraga town proper.
Operating Hours: Daily 06:00–18:00.
Fees: Small entrance fee required (typically PHP 20).
Historical & Ecological Origin
The church was originally built in 1724 but was destroyed on February 1, 1814, during Mayon Volcano's most violent eruption. The eruption produced pyroclastic flows and lahars that buried the town of Cagsawa. Hundreds of residents who sought refuge inside the church perished as the structure was submerged in volcanic debris. Today, it serves as a reminder of the volcano's destructive power and the resilience of the Bicolano people.
Key Highlights & Activities

Best Time to Visit
The early morning (06:00–08:00) is optimal to see Mayon Volcano clearly before cloud cover typically forms around the peak. The dry season (March to May) offers the highest probability of unobstructed views.
Facts & Legends
A common photographic "trick" at Cagsawa involves positioning the subject to appear as if they are leaning on or holding the belfry. A historical fact often clarified by guides is that the church was not entirely buried in one day; subsequent lahars over decades further submerged the ruins, leaving only the tower visible.
