Charlestown Breachway State Beach, Charlestown RI, USA Rhode Island, North America
Location & Setting
Charlestown Breachway State Beach is situated in Charlestown, Rhode Island, at the eastern end of a man-made channel known as the "Breachway," which connects Ninigret Pond to Block Island Sound. This strategic location offers a unique blend of oceanfront and salt pond environments, making it a popular destination for various recreational activities.
History & Engineering
The concept of creating a breachway to connect Ninigret Pond to the ocean dates back to the mid-1800s. The first attempt in 1897 was unsuccessful, but a subsequent effort in 1904 led to the construction of a permanent breachway. This was achieved by building jetties on either side of the channel to stabilize the inlet, ensuring the flow of seawater between the pond and the sound, which is crucial for maintaining the health of the local oyster population.
In 1952, the breachway underwent significant reconstruction to enhance its stability and functionality. The project involved rebuilding the east wall and constructing the west wall, a task completed by Gencarelli Inc. of Westerly, Rhode Island. The official opening of the newly improved breachway took place on April 7, 1952.
