Together, they assessed the soil, climate, elevation, and terrain of the Old Mission Peninsula. Their research concluded that the region’s climate—tempered by the surrounding waters of Lake Michigan and the protective geography of the peninsula—was surprisingly similar to Germany’s Mosel region.
Against skepticism and significant financial risk, O’Keefe planted Michigan’s first commercial vineyards of Vitis vinifera grapes, including Riesling, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir. The initial plantings in the early 1970s proved successful, and by the early 1980s, CGT began releasing high-quality wines that stood out in a landscape previously dominated by sweet, mass-produced varieties.
