Gaub Pass, Walvis Bay, Namibia, Africa
The Gaub Pass is a mountain pass located in the Namib-Naukluft Park, situated on the C14 highway approximately 50km southeast of the Kuiseb Pass. It facilitates the crossing of the ephemeral Gaub River valley.
Visual Characteristics
The landscape is characterized by a deep, rugged canyon composed of light-grey limestone and sedimentary rock formations. The pass features steep gradients and winding turns as the road descends into the dry riverbed and ascends the opposite ridge. Vegetation is restricted to the valley floor, containing desert-adapted species like camel thorn trees (Erasrostis nindensis) and scrub brush.
Location & Access Logistics
The pass is located on the C14 gravel road between Walvis Bay and Solitaire. It is accessible to all vehicle types, though high-clearance is recommended for the corrugated gravel surfaces. No public transport serves the area. Small gravel pull-offs at the crests of the pass provide parking for transit observation.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The canyon was formed by the Gaub River, a tributary of the Kuiseb River, which has eroded the landscape over millions of years. Geologically, the area exhibits significant folding and distinct layers of calcareous rock. It serves as an ecological corridor for mountain zebra, gemsbok, and ostriches moving between the central highlands and the desert plains.
Key Highlights & Activities
Landscape photography is the primary pursuit, focusing on the dramatic vertical relief of the canyon and the winding road geometry. The pass is a major waypoint for self-drive travelers on the transit route toward Sossusvlei. Geological observation of the sedimentary layering is possible from the roadside viewpoints.
Infrastructure & Amenities
There is zero infrastructure within the pass. No restrooms, water, shade, or food services are available. The nearest supplies are located in Solitaire, approximately 60km to the south. Cellular signal is non-existent due to the surrounding mountainous terrain.
Best Time to Visit
The winter months (May to August) offer the highest visibility and temperate conditions. Late afternoon provides optimal lighting for photography, as the shadows accentuate the depth of the canyon. Avoid travel during or immediately after heavy rain, as the riverbed at the base can become impassable due to flash flooding.
Facts & Legends
The Gaub Pass is often considered the "sister pass" to the larger Kuiseb Pass; together, they represent the most technical driving sections of the central C14 route. The area is known for its fossilized dunes-ancient sand structures that have solidified into rock over millions of years, visible in the surrounding cliff faces.
