Where Industry and Innovation Began
Hagley Museum and Library in Wilmington captures the birthplace of American industry through the story of the du Pont family and their pioneering gunpowder works along the Brandywine River. Set across 235 acres of forested hills, stone ruins, and restored mills, the estate combines history, technology, and nature into one evocative landscape. It was here, in 1802, that Éleuthère Irénée du Pont founded his gunpowder company-an enterprise that would eventually grow into one of America’s most influential industrial dynasties.

The Original Gunpowder Mills
A walk through the Hagley grounds feels like tracing the pulse of early American manufacturing. The black powder mills, once powered by the rushing waters of the Brandywine, now stand restored and operational for demonstration. Visitors can watch as the machinery grinds and presses materials much as it did two centuries ago, hearing the rhythmic thud of the gears and feeling the mist rise from the riverbanks. The nearby Millwright Shop and Machine Shop showcase the skill and danger that defined daily life for 19th-century workers-men who lived and labored within earshot of the constant boom of powder testing.

The du Pont Home and Gardens
Uphill from the industrial ruins lies the first du Pont family residence, Eleutherian Mills, a graceful Georgian-style home built from local stone. Furnished with original pieces, it offers a glimpse into the family’s domestic world-where business meetings, family meals, and quiet evenings intertwined. The surrounding gardens, with terraced lawns and brick pathways, reflect a refined European influence balanced with the simplicity of early America. From the upper terraces, visitors can look down toward the river valley and imagine the smoke and clatter that once filled the air below.

The Hagley Library and Research Center
Beyond its historical exhibits, Hagley’s modern library stands as one of the world’s premier research centers on American business, technology, and innovation. Housing millions of manuscripts, photographs, and corporate archives, it chronicles how invention, industry, and entrepreneurship shaped the nation’s development. Scholars study everything from early patents to 20th-century advertising, preserving a vast record of the country’s industrial imagination.

Brandywine Beauty and Living History
What makes Hagley truly memorable is its balance between human history and natural beauty. Trails wind through the wooded landscape, crossing stone bridges and quiet streams where industrial relics blend seamlessly with the forest. The sounds of birds now replace the thundering mills, yet the atmosphere still carries the energy of invention and progress. Hagley Museum and Library is more than a historical site-it’s a living reminder of how ingenuity, craftsmanship, and hard work built the foundations of modern America.
