Hiranya Varna Mahavihar (Golden Temple), Lalitpur, Nepal, Asia
The Hiranya Varna Mahavihar, commonly known as the Golden Temple, is a historic Buddhist monastery located in the Kwabahal area of Lalitpur, Nepal. It is one of the most significant and richly decorated Newari Buddhist viharas in the Kathmandu Valley.
Visual Characteristics
The temple is a three-story pagoda-style structure defined by its heavily gilded facade and copper-plated roofs. The central courtyard features a small, highly ornate shrine with a golden pinnacle. The architecture is characterized by dense metallic ornamentation, including brass statues of deities, mythical animals, and decorative bells. The entrance is guarded by two large stone lions.
Architectural Style & Materials
Style: Traditional Newari Buddhist Vihara (Monastery).
Materials: Gilded copper, brass, bronze, and stone.
Roofing: Tiered pagoda roofs covered in gold-plated copper sheets.
Ornamentation: Intricate repoussé work (embossed metal) depicting Buddhist iconographies, including the Five Buddhas and various Bodhisattvas.
Historical Origin
The temple's origins are traditionally traced back to the 12th century, founded by King Bhaskar Verma.
