Historical & Spiritual Origin
Established in the 16th century, the temple served as the primary tutelary deity for the Shah dynasty kings. It played a crucial role during the unification of Nepal, as King Prithvi Narayan Shah sought the goddess's blessings before his conquests.
Key Highlights & Activities
Sacrifices: The temple is known for ritual animal sacrifices (mainly goats and roosters) performed during auspicious days and festivals.
Dashain Festival: The most significant period of worship, particularly during Bada Dashain, when thousands of pilgrims visit for special pujas.
Phulpati: The temple is the origin of the Phulpati (sacred flowers and plants) that are traditionally sent to Kathmandu during the Dashain festival.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The temple area includes a paved courtyard and stone resting platforms. Basic facilities like water taps are nearby. Due to the vertical ascent, it is not wheelchair accessible. 5G/4G signal is available but can be spotty near the heavy masonry.
Best Time to Visit
The Dashain festival (usually in October) offers the most cultural depth but is very crowded. For views and moderate weather, visit between October and March. Morning hours are best for witnessing daily rituals and avoiding high temperatures.
Facts & Legends
Legend states that the goddess Kali appeared in the dreams of early Shah kings to guide their governance. The temple is considered one of the most powerful "Shakti Peeths" in the region, believed to grant protection to those who serve the state.
