Historical Origin
Ligligkot was one of the small principalities (Chaubisi Rajya) of the Magar community before the unification of Nepal. It is most famous for its unique historical tradition: the race to choose a king. Every year during the Dashain festival, a race was held from Chepeghat to the top of Ligligkot. The winner of this race would be crowned King of Liglig for the following year. In 1559 AD, Drabya Shah (the founder of the Shah dynasty in Gorkha) participated in and won this race, effectively ending the local Magar rule and establishing the Shah lineage.

Facts & Legends
The name "Liglig" is believed to be derived from the local Magar language, referring to a clear or beautiful view. The legend of the race remains one of Nepal's most unique political histories, symbolizing a transition from a meritocratic athletic contest to a dynastic monarchy.
