Matepani Gumba is a prominent Buddhist monastery of the Nyingma tradition, situated on a small hill in the Matepani area of Pokhara, Nepal. It is renowned for its elaborate wall paintings and large statues representing various Buddhas.

Visual Characteristics

The monastery features a large, colorful main prayer hall characterized by traditional Tibetan architecture. The interior is decorated with intricate murals depicting the life of Gautam Buddha and various celestial beings. Three massive, gold-plated statues-including a central figure of the Shakyamuni Buddha flanked by Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) and Avalokiteshvara-dominate the altar. The exterior is adorned with prayer wheels and offers panoramic views of the Annapurna Range and the Pokhara Valley.

Location & Access Logistics

The Gumba is located at Gumba Rd, Pokhara 33700, approximately 5km northeast of the Lakeside district. It is situated on a hill above the Matepani neighborhood. Access is via a paved road; visitors can reach the site by taxi (15–20 minutes from Lakeside), local bus, or private vehicle. A short flight of stairs or a sloped path leads from the parking area to the main monastery complex.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The monastery was established in 1960 by the Nyingma community of the Pokhara region. It serves as a primary center for Buddhist learning and spiritual practice. The site is situated in a quiet, forested area that provides a thermal and acoustic buffer from the city center, maintaining a serene environment conducive to meditation.

A small shop selling incense and religious artifacts is located near the entrance. 4G cellular signal is stable. Visitors are required to remove shoes before entering the prayer hall and are expected to maintain silence.

Best Time to Visit

Early morning (06:00–08:00) is optimal for witnessing the morning prayers and enjoying the clearest mountain views. The monastery is open daily, typically from sunrise to sunset.
