of the University of Rochester, where it’s been welcoming the community since 1913-back when horse-drawn carriages still clattered down Main Street.Emily Sibley Watson founded the gallery to honor her son, James George Averell, who died young, leaving behind only a few faded photographs.Since then, the Memorial Art Gallery has flourished into a lively museum, celebrated for its sweeping collection, bold exhibitions, and programs that draw neighbors together-sometimes over coffee in its sunlit atrium.The gallery opened its doors to give Rochester a public art museum where people could learn, feel inspired, and connect-whether standing before a bold splash of color or a quiet sketch in graphite.Emily Sibley Watson dreamed of creating a space where paintings from distant eras and sculptures from far-off lands could be studied and truly appreciated.McKim, Mead & White designed the building in the Beaux-Arts style, giving it a classical elegance and a grand, almost ceremonial presence, with white stone columns catching the morning light.MAG’s permanent collection stretches across 5,000 years, holding over 13,000 works-from ancient pottery worn smooth by time to bold, modern canvases alive with color.This internationally acclaimed collection spans centuries and cultures, with works in many mediums-from the worn sandstone of ancient Egypt to the marble of Greece, Rome, and the Near East.You’ll see Egyptian coffins, intricate sculptures, worn pottery, and gleaming jewelry-each piece showing the skill and deep faith of early civilizations.In this section on European art, you’ll Rochester, NY 14607, open Wednesday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.-and on Thursdays, the lights stay on until 9.We’re closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.Admission is $20 for adults, $18 for seniors 62 and older, and $9 for college students with ID or children ages 6–18; kids under six get in free.Thursday nights after 5 p.m., tickets drop to half price.MAG members, University of Rochester students, faculty, staff, and SNAP card holders-plus their guests-enter free.The museum offers wheelchair access, marked handicap parking, easy-to-reach restrooms, and assistance for visitors with
