Namutoni Fort, Tsumeb, Namibia, Africa
Namutoni Fort is a historic colonial-era fortress located in the eastern section of Etosha National Park. It serves as the centerpiece of Namutoni Camp, situated near the Von Lindequist Gate.
Visual Characteristics
The fort is a striking, whitewashed stone structure featuring characteristic crenelated walls and square watchtowers at its corners. Its stark white exterior contrasts sharply with the surrounding golden grasslands and green Makalani palms. The architecture reflects the functional "castle" style of early 20th-century German military outposts.
Historical Origin
The current structure is a reconstruction of an earlier outpost.
1897: Originally established as a simple control post during a rinderpest (cattle plague) outbreak.
1904: The first fort was destroyed by 7 Ovambo warriors during a battle with the German garrison. This event is commemorated by a plaque at the site.
1906: The fort was rebuilt into the more robust structure seen today, serving as a police and military station.
1957: After decades of neglect, the fort was restored and officially opened as a tourism hub within the park.
