Old Town is situated approximately 1.5km East of the Colorado State University campus. It is bordered by Mulberry Street to the North, Jefferson Street to the South, Mason Street to the East, and College Avenue to the West. Numerous public parking garages are available, including the Old Town Parking Garage at 251 S. Walnut Street and the Civic Center Parking Garage at 201 E. Mountain Avenue. Several Transfort bus routes serve College Avenue and surrounding streets, including routes 1, 3, 4, 7, and 15.

Old Town Fort Collins developed following the establishment of the Fort Collins Agricultural Colony in 1873. The majority of the current structures were built between 1880 and 1920, serving as the commercial core for the growing agricultural community and later, the university town. The area is situated on the Cache la Poudre River floodplain.
