Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary, Tagbilaran, Philippines, Asia
The Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary, located in Corella, Bohol, is a 134-hectare dedicated facility for the protection of the Carlito syrichta, one of the world's smallest primates. It is managed by the Philippine Tarsier Foundation and is recognized as the most ethical viewing location for the species.
Visual Characteristics
The sanctuary consists of a dense secondary growth forest. The tarsiers inhabit a designated "viewing area" of approximately 1 hectare, where they cling to low-lying branches and bamboo. The primates are characterized by their massive eyes (each larger than their brain), velvety fur, and long fingers with suction-like pads.
Location & Access Logistics
Address: Tarsier Sunctuary Rd, Corella, Bohol.
Access: Approximately 14 kilometers (25–30 minutes) from Tagbilaran City.
Transport: Reachable via "Corella" or "Sikatuna" jeepneys from the Dao Terminal. Private vans and rental motorbikes are the most efficient options.
Operating Hours: 09:00–16:00 daily.
Fees: Entrance fee is approximately PHP 150 per person.
Historical & Ecological Context
The Philippine tarsier is an endangered, nocturnal, and highly sensitive species. The sanctuary serves as a semi-wild habitat where tarsiers can roam freely, but a few are located by spotters each morning for public viewing. Unlike commercial "tarsier farms" in other areas, this facility emphasizes conservation over entertainment.
Key Highlights & Activities
Guided Forest Walk: A short, quiet trail through the forest where guides point out tarsiers resting in the trees.
Education Center: An audiovisual room and museum area providing biological data and conservation facts.
Ethical Observation: Strict rules are enforced: no touching, no flash photography, and absolute silence to prevent stressing the animals.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Facilities: Includes a visitor center, a small souvenir shop, and restrooms.
Connectivity: 4G/5G signals are available at the entrance but unstable inside the forest.
Accessibility: The trail is a natural dirt path with some uneven sections; it is not fully wheelchair accessible.
Best Time to Visit
Morning (09:00–11:00) is the best time for viewing as the tarsiers are relatively still and the heat is less intense.
Facts & Hazards
Tarsiers are known to be suicidal when stressed; loud noises or physical contact can lead them to bash their heads against tree trunks. Logistically, this sanctuary is distinct from the "Tarsier Conservation Area" in Loboc; the Corella site is the officially sanctioned foundation.
