Plaza Salcedo, Vigan, Philippines, Asia
Plaza Salcedo is the primary public square and historical park in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur. Named after the Spanish conquistador Juan de Salcedo, who founded the city in 1572, it serves as the center of the Vigan Heritage Village and is flanked by the city's most significant religious and administrative buildings.
Visual Characteristics
The plaza is defined by a large, elongated reflecting pool that runs down its center. The perimeter is lined with manicured lawns, benches, and trees, with the Baroque-style Vigan Cathedral dominating the eastern edge. To the north sits the Ilocos Sur Provincial Capitol and to the south is the Vigan City Hall. The architecture surrounding the plaza is a blend of Spanish colonial, Chinese, and Filipino influences.

Historical & Ecological Origin
Plaza Salcedo is a rare Asian example of the Spanish colonial "Plaza Complex" layout, where the church, market, and government buildings are organized around a central square. Historically, it was the site of the execution of Maria Josefa Gabriela Silang, the first Filipino woman to lead a revolt against Spanish colonization, in 1763. A monument to her stands in the adjacent Plaza Burgos.

Best Time to Visit
Evening (18:30–20:00) is the most popular time to visit to catch the musical fountain show and see the illuminated heritage buildings. For a quieter experience and clearer photography of the reflecting pool, the early morning (06:00–07:30) is optimal.
Facts & Legends
The reflecting pool was originally part of a lagoon system that separated the "Spanish" section of the city from the "Chinese" section. A unique feature is the 1:50 scale model of the Vigan Heritage District located at the northern end of the plaza, which allows visitors to see the city's layout from an aerial perspective.
