Stari Most (Old Bridge), Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Europe
Stari Most is a humpbacked stone arch bridge spanning the Neretva River in the city of Mostar. It serves as the geographical and symbolic center of the city, connecting the Ottoman-influenced eastern side with the western part of the municipality.
Visual Characteristics
The bridge is a single-span stone arch constructed from tenelija, a local pale-colored oolitic limestone that changes hue depending on the sun's position. It measures 4 meters in width, 30 meters in length, and rises 24 meters above the river at its peak. Two fortified towers, the Halebija on the right bank and the Tara on the left bank, flank the structure. The walkway is paved with smooth stone ribs designed to provide traction on the steep incline.
Location & Access Logistics
Situated in the Stari Grad district, the bridge is the terminus of the Kujundžiluk and Onešćukova pedestrian streets. Access is restricted to pedestrians; the nearest vehicle access point is approximately 300 meters away at the eastern or western entrances to the Old Town. Public buses stop at the Mostar Main Station, located 1.5km to the North, while local lines stop closer to the Spanish Square (Španski trg).
Historical & Ecological Origin
The original bridge was commissioned by Suleiman the Magnificent and completed in 1566 by Mimar Hayruddin, a student of the architect Mimar Sinan. It replaced a precarious wooden suspension bridge. After standing for 427 years, it was destroyed by artillery fire in 1993 during the Croat–Bosniak War. It was reconstructed using traditional Ottoman building techniques and original stone recovered from the riverbed, reopening on July 23, 2004.
Key Highlights & Activities
Observation of professional divers from the Mostar Diving Club, who jump from the bridge into the Neretva, is a primary activity. Visitors can cross the span to access the Old Bazaar and the Old Bridge Museum located in the Tara Tower. Descending to the pebble beach below the bridge provides an upward perspective of the arch's geometry.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are located in the nearby towers and adjacent mosques for a small fee. Shade is nonexistent on the bridge itself but abundant in the narrow streets and cafes at either end. 4G/5G cellular signal is strong throughout the area. Numerous restaurants and souvenir vendors operate within 50 meters of both bridge entrances.
Best Time to Visit
The bridge is open 24 hours daily. For photography, the late afternoon provides soft light on the western facade, while early morning (before 08:00) is necessary to avoid significant tourist crowds. The Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series typically takes place in late summer, attracting thousands of spectators. Midday temperatures in July and August frequently exceed 38°C.
Facts & Legends
Local tradition dictates that young men must jump from the bridge into the cold Neretva River as a rite of passage to prove their bravery. Legend states that the original architect, Mimar Hayruddin, prepared for his own funeral on the day the scaffolding was removed, as he was unsure if the unprecedented 30-meter stone arch would hold its own weight.
