Sundari Chowk, Lalitpur, Nepal, Asia
Sundari Chowk is the smallest and most ornate of the three main courtyards within the Patan Royal Palace complex in Lalitpur, Nepal. Constructed in 1647 by King Siddhinarasimha Malla, it is widely regarded as a masterpiece of Newari stone and wood architecture.
Visual Characteristics
The courtyard is defined by its extreme density of carvings. Every wooden window, door frame, and roof strut is intricately sculpted with deities and mythical figures. The centerpiece is the Tusha Hiti, a sunken stone royal bath that is considered one of the finest examples of stone carving in the Kathmandu Valley.
Architectural Style & Materials
Style: Medieval Malla Palace architecture.
Materials: Red brick, dark-carved Sal wood, and grey limestone.
Tusha Hiti: An oval-shaped bath featuring 72 stone carvings of Hindu deities around its inner walls and a bronze water spout.
Historical Origin
Commissioned as a private devotional and ritual space for the Malla kings. The name "Sundari" translates to "Beautiful," reflecting its status as the most decorative wing of the palace. It underwent significant restoration following the 2015 earthquake, funded in part by the Kathmandu Valley Preservation Trust (KVPT).
