Vallecito Lake is a reservoir located in southwestern Colorado, approximately 20 miles northeast of Durango.

Location & Access Logistics

Access to Vallecito Lake is via County Road 105 (Vallecito Road) from US Highway 160. The turnoff is approximately 15 miles east of Durango. County Road 105 is paved for the majority of the route to the lake. Parking is available at multiple designated lots, including near the marina and various access points along the shoreline. Public transport is not available directly to the lake; private vehicle is the primary mode of access.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Vallecito Lake was created by the construction of the Vallecito Dam, completed in 1941. The dam was built by the Bureau of Reclamation as part of the Animas-La Plata Project to provide irrigation water and flood control. The area is situated within the San Juan National Forest, characterized by montane ecosystems.

Boating, including powerboating and sailing, is permitted on the lake. Fishing for species such as rainbow trout, brown trout, and kokanee salmon is a common activity. Hiking trails are present around the lake, with the Vallecito Creek Trail offering access into the Weminuche Wilderness. Kayaking and paddleboarding are also popular.

The best months for visiting are from May through October, when the weather is most favorable for outdoor activities. For photography, early morning and late afternoon offer softer light. The lake is generally accessible year-round, but winter conditions can impact road access and water activities.

Facts & Legends

A significant historical event at Vallecito Lake was the 1970 dam failure scare, which led to the evacuation of downstream communities. The reservoir is also known for its depth, reaching over 100 feet in some areas.
