Construction of the current cathedral began in 1964 and was completed in 1979. It was designed by architect Edgar de Oliveira da Fonseca. The original purpose was to serve as the main cathedral for the Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro, replacing the older Imperial Academy of Fine Arts.
