The Haskovo Old Clock Tower is a 19th-century municipal structure located in the central pedestrian zone of Haskovo. Originally built as a defensive and timekeeping landmark, it remains a focal point of the city's architectural heritage.

Visual Characteristics

The tower stands 23 meters tall and is constructed from local hewn stone and timber. The base is a square stone prism with thick masonry walls, transitioning into an octagonal wooden structure that houses the clock mechanism and bell. The exterior features narrow windows and a lead-covered conical roof topped with a metal weather vane. The clock faces are oriented toward the four cardinal directions.

The tower is situated on Osvobozhdenie Square in the center of Haskovo. It is easily accessible on foot from any part of the downtown area. From the Haskovo Central Bus Station, it is a 10-minute walk (approx. 800m). Drivers can use the paid municipal parking lots located on San Stefano Street or near the Regional Historical Museum. Road 5 provides the primary vehicle access to Haskovo from the north and south.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The original tower was erected in the early 19th century (approx. 1813) during the Ottoman period to serve the local merchants. It was demolished in 1913 during urban restructuring and completely reconstructed in 2012-2013 using original drawings and authentic stone-cutting techniques. The site sits on the alluvial plain of the Haskovo River within the Upper Thracian Lowland.

Visitors can observe the hourly chime of the bell and view the precision of the mechanical clockwork. The surrounding square is used for public gatherings and seasonal markets.
