Visual Characteristics

Natural caves and tunnels are integrated within the formations. Several pagodas and religious structures are built into the mountainsides, featuring stone carvings and traditional Vietnamese architecture.
Location & Access Logistics
The Marble Mountains are situated approximately 8 kilometers south of Da Nang city center, accessible via National Route 1A. Turn off onto Huyen Tran Cong Chua Street. Parking is available at the base of the mountains, with a fee. Public bus routes 1, 2, and 3 stop near the entrance. For direct access to the higher caves and pagodas, an elevator service is available for a fee, or visitors can ascend via stone staircases.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Geologically, the Marble Mountains are karst formations, estimated to be between 250 and 300 million years old. Historically, they have served as a strategic location and a site for Buddhist worship since the 17th century, with many pagodas and shrines constructed by various dynasties. The caves were also used as hospitals and shelters by Viet Cong forces during the Vietnam War.
Key Highlights & Activities
Explore the natural caves, including Huyen Khong Cave and Am Phu Cave. Visit the various pagodas such as Tam Thai Pagoda and Linh Ung Pagoda. Climb to the summit of Thuy Son Mountain for panoramic views of the coastline and surrounding landscape. Observe the intricate stone carvings and religious artifacts. Purchase marble handicrafts from local vendors at the base.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available at the base and at key points within the mountains. Shaded areas are provided by natural rock overhangs and pagodas. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available. Food vendors and small restaurants are located at the base of the mountains, offering local Vietnamese cuisine.
Best Time to Visit
The best time of day for photography is early morning or late afternoon to avoid harsh sunlight and capture softer lighting. The dry season, from February to August, offers the most favorable weather conditions. Visiting during weekdays can reduce crowd density compared to weekends.
Facts & Legends
Local legend states that a dragon emerged from the sea and laid an egg on the coast, which hatched into the Marble Mountains. The five mountains are named after the five elements: Kim (Metal), Thuy (Water), Moc (Wood), Hoa (Fire), and Tho (Earth), with Thuy Son being the largest and most accessible.
