The cathedral is constructed in a Neo-Romanesque architectural style, primarily using white stone from La Turbie. It features a prominent bell tower. The interior is characterized by a white marble altar and a large altarpiece by the artist Louis Bréa.

Construction of the current cathedral commenced in 1875 and it was consecrated in 1911. It was built on the site of the former 13th-century Saint Nicholas Church. The architect responsible for its design was Charles Lenormand. Its original purpose was to serve as the principal church for the diocese and as the traditional burial place for the Grimaldi family.
