Cascades Park is a 24-acre urban park located in Tallahassee, Florida, situated south of the downtown core.

Visual Characteristics

The park features a large, central pond with a fountain that reaches approximately 25 feet in height. Paved walking paths wind through landscaped areas with mature oak trees and manicured lawns. The park includes a children's play area with modern equipment and a separate amphitheater structure.

Location & Access Logistics

Cascades Park is located at 1001 South Gadsden Street, Tallahassee, FL 32301. It is approximately 0.5 miles south of the Florida State Capitol building. Vehicle access is via South Gadsden Street and East Gaines Street. A dedicated parking lot is available off South Gadsden Street, with additional street parking on surrounding roads. Public transport options include the StarMetro bus routes 1 and 1B, which stop at the intersection of South Gadsden Street and East Gaines Street.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The park was developed on land that was formerly the site of the Union Bank and the Old City Cemetery. The park's revitalization project, completed in 2014, aimed to transform the area into a public recreational space. The ecological setting is a managed urban green space with a man-made pond and surrounding vegetation typical of the North Florida region.

Key Highlights & Activities

Activities include walking and jogging on the paved trails, picnicking in designated areas, and using the children's playground. The Korean War Memorial and the Legacy Fountain are focal points. The Adderley Amphitheater hosts various events and performances. The park is suitable for passive recreation and community gatherings.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available near the playground and the amphitheater. Shaded areas are provided by mature trees and some covered pavilions. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally strong throughout the park. Food vendors are not permanently stationed within the park, but are often present during scheduled events.

Best Time to Visit

For photography, early morning or late afternoon provides optimal lighting conditions. The best months for weather are typically March through May and September through November, offering mild temperatures. The park is open year-round during daylight hours.

Facts & Legends

The park's development involved the relocation of approximately 1,000 graves from the Old City Cemetery, which had been in use from the early 19th century. A significant portion of the park's design incorporates stormwater management features, including a large retention pond that helps mitigate flooding in the downtown area.
