Built between 1910 and 1911, the synagogue was designed by the prolific Hungarian architect Lipót Baumhorn, who specialized in synagogue design throughout the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It was commissioned by the local Neolog Jewish community. Following the devastation of the Jewish population in WWII, the building fell into disrepair until it was acquired and painstakingly restored by the city of Nitra between 1983 and 2003.
