Little Painted Desert County Park is a geological site located in Winslow, Arizona.

Visual Characteristics

The park features exposed strata of colorful badlands, primarily composed of Chinle Formation rock. Colors range from deep reds and purples to oranges and yellows, with varying geological layers visible. The terrain is characterized by erosion patterns forming buttes, mesas, and gullies.

Location & Access Logistics

The park is situated approximately 15 miles west of Winslow, Arizona, off Interstate 40. Access is via County Road 301 (also known as the Meteor Crater Road). The unpaved road leading to the park is generally passable for standard vehicles in dry conditions. Parking is available at designated pull-offs near the main viewing areas. No public transport services the park.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The geological formations at Little Painted Desert County Park are part of the Chinle Formation, dating back to the Late Triassic period (approximately 225 million years ago). These sedimentary rocks were deposited in a terrestrial environment and have since been shaped by erosion. The area is ecologically classified as high desert scrubland.

Key Highlights & Activities

Observation of the colorful geological strata is the primary activity. Visitors can walk short distances on established paths to view different erosion features. Photography of the landscape is recommended.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Basic amenities are limited. There are no restrooms, potable water, or food vendors within the park. Cell phone signal is unreliable. Some areas offer minimal shade from natural rock formations.

Best Time to Visit

For optimal lighting conditions for photography, early morning or late afternoon provides the best illumination of the colored rock layers. The months of April through October generally offer the most favorable weather, with daytime temperatures ranging from 60°F to 90°F. Avoid visiting during heavy rainfall, as the unpaved access road can become impassable.

Facts & Legends

The colorful layers are a result of varying mineral content within the ancient sediments. The red colors are primarily due to iron oxides. A specific tip for visitors is to wear sturdy footwear, as the terrain can be uneven and loose.
