Mercer Slough Nature Park is a protected wetland area located in Bellevue, Washington, USA.
Visual Characteristics
The park features a mosaic of freshwater wetlands, mature forests, and open water channels. Dominant vegetation includes cattails, sedges, and various deciduous trees such as alder and maple. The water in the slough is typically a dark, tea-like color due to tannins from decaying organic matter. Forest canopy provides significant shade in wooded areas.
Location & Access Logistics
Mercer Slough Nature Park is situated approximately 10 kilometers east of downtown Bellevue. Access is primarily via I-405 North or South, exiting onto NE 4th Street. The main entrance and parking lot are located at 2150 112th Ave SE, Bellevue, WA 98004. Additional access points and parking are available at the Mercer Slough Environmental Education Center. Public transportation options include King County Metro bus routes 241 and 271, with stops near the park entrances.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The Mercer Slough is a remnant of the pre-development Mercer River system, which was significantly altered by the construction of the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks and the filling of Lake Washington. It represents a vital freshwater wetland ecosystem, providing habitat for numerous bird species, amphibians, and fish. The area was established as a nature park to preserve its ecological functions and provide recreational opportunities.
Key Highlights & Activities
Kayaking and canoeing are permitted on the slough's waterways. Hiking trails, including the Lakeside Trail and the Forest Trail, offer opportunities for walking and wildlife observation. Birdwatching is a primary activity, with numerous species documented within the park. The Mercer Slough Environmental Education Center offers interpretive programs and exhibits.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available at the Environmental Education Center and at designated trailheads. Shaded areas are present within the forested sections of the park. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available throughout most of the park. No on-site food vendors are present; however, commercial areas with dining options are located a short distance from the park entrances.
Best Time to Visit
For optimal birdwatching, early morning or late afternoon hours are recommended. Spring (April-May) offers peak wildflower bloom and migratory bird activity. Summer (June-August) provides warmer weather for water activities. The park is accessible year-round, though winter months may experience higher rainfall.
Facts & Legends
The Mercer Slough is one of the largest remaining freshwater wetlands within an urban area in the Puget Sound region. A specific tip for visitors is to look for the resident great blue herons, often seen fishing along the slough's edges, particularly near the Mercer Slough Environmental Education Center.
