Little Island is a public park situated on Pier 55 in the Hudson River, west of Manhattan in New York City.

Visual Characteristics

The park is characterized by its undulating topography, supported by 132 concrete "tulip" columns that rise from the riverbed. The surface is composed of poured concrete and stone pathways. Vegetation includes a variety of trees, shrubs, and flowering plants, with a total of 66,000 bulbs and perennials planted across the island. The park's design incorporates open lawn areas and a central amphitheater.

Location & Access Logistics

Little Island is located at Pier 55, accessible from the Hudson River Park at 13th Street and West 17th Street in Manhattan. Pedestrian access is via elevated walkways from the Hudson River Greenway. There is no on-site parking. The closest subway stations are 14th Street-8th Avenue (A, C, E, L trains) and Christopher Street-Sheridan Square (1 train), both approximately 1km east. Several bus lines serve the surrounding area, including M14A, M14D, and M23.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Little Island was constructed on the site of the former Pier 54. The project was conceived by the Diller-von Furstenberg Family Foundation and designed by the architectural firm Thomas Heatherwick Studio. The pier's structure was built to support a significant amount of soil and vegetation, creating an elevated landscape. The supporting columns are designed to mimic the appearance of tulips.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can explore the winding pathways, observe the diverse plant life, and utilize the various seating areas. The Amphitheater offers a venue for performances. Observation decks provide views of the Hudson River and the Manhattan skyline. Walking the perimeter of the island is a common activity.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available on the island. Shaded areas are provided by trees and architectural elements. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available. Food and beverage vendors are located on the island, and numerous dining options exist in the nearby Meatpacking District and Chelsea neighborhoods.

Best Time to Visit

For optimal lighting for photography, early morning or late afternoon is recommended. The park is accessible year-round, but spring and fall offer pleasant temperatures and seasonal foliage. High tide does not impact access to the island.

Facts & Legends

The park's design was inspired by a cluster of water lilies. The 132 concrete columns are engineered to withstand river currents and ice flows, with a foundation extending 60 feet below the riverbed.
