Reformation Wall, Geneva, Switzerland, Europe
The Reformation Wall (Mur des Réformateurs) is a massive stone monument located in the Parc des Bastions. It commemorates the main figures and events of the Protestant Reformation, specifically those centered in Geneva.
Visual Characteristics
The monument consists of a 100-meter-long wall made of Ornavasso limestone. At its center are four five-meter-tall statues of the primary Genevan reformers: Guillaume Farel, John Calvin, Theodore Beza, and John Knox. Smaller statues and bas-reliefs flanking the central group depict other international Reformation figures and significant historical scenes. The wall is engraved with the motto of the Reformation and Geneva: Post Tenebras Lux (After darkness, light).

Historical Origin
The monument was inaugurated in 1909 to mark the 400th anniversary of John Calvin's birth and the 350th anniversary of the founding of the University of Geneva. It was the result of an international competition won by four Swiss architects and two French sculptors. The location is symbolic, as it sits on the former fortifications that protected the "Protestant Rome."
Key Highlights
The Central Four: Statues depicting the reformers in their traditional "Genevan gowns."
International Reach: Bas-reliefs show scenes like the signing of the Mayflower Compact (USA) and the presentation of the Bill of Rights to William of Orange (UK), highlighting the political impact of the Reformation.
Martin Luther & Zwingli: Notably, these figures are placed as smaller memorials at the edges of the wall, reflecting Geneva's specific focus on Calvinist Reform.
