Ao Leuk Bay is a coastal inlet located on the southeastern side of Koh Tao, an island in the Gulf of Thailand.
Visual Characteristics
The bay features a crescent-shaped beach composed of fine, light-colored sand. The water clarity is typically high, exhibiting shades of turquoise and blue. Rocky outcrops and coral formations are present along the bay's edges and in the shallows. Vegetation, primarily palm trees and tropical shrubs, lines the upper beach area.
Location & Access Logistics
Ao Leuk Bay is situated approximately 4 kilometers south of Mae Haad Pier, the main arrival point on Koh Tao. Access is via a paved road that branches off the main island road. The final approach involves a short, steep concrete path leading down to the beach. Vehicle parking is available at the top of this path. Alternatively, taxis or motorbike rentals can reach the vicinity. Songthaew (shared taxi) services operate on the main island road, requiring a walk to the bay.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Ao Leuk Bay is a natural geological formation, characteristic of the limestone karst topography prevalent in the region. Its ecological significance lies in its role as a coral reef habitat, supporting diverse marine life.
Key Highlights & Activities
Snorkeling is a primary activity, with coral reefs accessible from the shore. Swimming is permitted in designated areas. Sunbathing and relaxation on the beach are common. Kayak rentals are sometimes available.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Basic amenities include a small restaurant/bar situated on the beach, offering food and beverages. Restrooms are available. Shade is provided by natural vegetation and some man-made structures. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally reliable within the bay area.
Best Time to Visit
The best time for clear water visibility for snorkeling is during the dry season, from December to April. Mid-morning to early afternoon offers optimal sunlight for underwater viewing. High tide is generally preferable for easier access to snorkeling areas further from shore.
Facts & Legends
Ao Leuk translates to "Deep Bay" in Thai, though its depths are moderate. The bay is known for its resident population of reef fish, including butterflyfish and angelfish, often seen close to shore.
