St. Nicholas Church (Kisha e Shën Kollit) is a medieval ruin and religious site located in the city center of Lezhë. It is internationally significant as the 15th-century burial place of the Albanian national hero, Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, and the site of the League of Lezhë assembly.

The site consists of the excavated limestone foundations and partial walls of a Romanesque-Gothic cathedral. The ruins are characterized by thick masonry, a rectangular nave, and an apse that reflects 14th-century Franciscan architectural styles. The remnants are now protected under a modern, open-air stone and steel pavilion featuring a high gabled roof and white columns.

The church ruins are located in the Lezhë city center on Rruga Varri i Skënderbeut. It is situated approximately 1.5 kilometers southwest of Lezhe-castle_lezhe" class="underline">Lezhë Castle. Travelers arriving via the SH1 highway can reach the site in 5 minutes from the main city turn-off. Pedestrian access is flat and direct from the central plaza, and municipal parking is available on the adjacent streets.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Originally built as a Catholic cathedral in the 14th century, the church served the Franciscan order. On March 2, 1444, it hosted the League of Lezhë, where Illyrian and Albanian nobles united against the Ottoman Empire. Following Skanderbeg’s death in 1468, he was buried within the nave. The church was converted into a mosque during the Ottoman occupation before falling into ruin and being designated a cultural monument in the 20th century.

Facts & Legends

A historical oddity is that while the church was destroyed and the tomb plundered by Ottoman forces in 1478, the original foundations remained intact enough to be identified by archaeologists in the 1960s. Local legend suggests that the soldiers who looted the tomb believed the bones would grant them invincibility, a story corroborated by contemporary Venetian chroniclers.
