Devils Throat Cave, Smolyan, Bulgaria, Europe
The Devil’s Throat Cave (Dyavolsko Garlo) is a precipice cave located in the Trigrad Gorge of the Rhodope Mountains, approximately 1.5 km north of the village of Trigrad and 27 km from the town of Devin, Smolyan Province.
Visual Characteristics
The cave is defined by a massive main chamber known as the "Hall of the Roar," which is the second-largest cavern in Bulgaria. It is large enough to contain the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral from Sofia. The cave's primary feature is a 42-meter underground waterfall, the highest in the Balkans. Unlike most Bulgarian caves, it lacks stalactites and stalagmites; the walls are sheer, rugged rock faces formed by the force of the Trigrad River.
Location & Access Logistics
Access is via the narrow, one-lane road through the Trigrad Gorge (Route 866/8604). The drive involves high-vertical cliffs and is restricted to passenger vehicles and small buses. The cave entrance is a man-made tunnel that leads directly to the Hall of the Roar. Visitors exit via a steep concrete staircase consisting of 301 steps that follow the path of the waterfall back to the surface.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The cave was formed by the collapse of rock layers under the pressure of the Trigrad River. It is a classic example of a "ponor" or swallet, where a surface river disappears underground. Biologically, the cave is a critical habitat for the largest colony of long-fingered bats (Myotis capaccinii) in the region.
Key Highlights & Activities
The Waterfall: Observation of the river plunging 42 meters into the abyss.
The Hall of the Roar: Experiencing the acoustics and scale of the subterranean chamber.
Orpheus Bas-Relief: A stone carving near the entrance depicting the legendary musician.
The Exit Ascent: Physical challenge of the 301-step climb parallel to the subterranean river.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The cave is electrified and features metal railings and concrete steps for safety. A ticket office and small souvenir stall are located at the entrance. Public restrooms are available at the site. 4G/5G signal is non-existent inside the cave but stable at the entrance. Due to high humidity and constant mist from the waterfall, waterproof clothing and non-slip footwear are mandatory.
Best Time to Visit
The cave is open year-round, typically from 10:00 to 17:00. The flow of the waterfall is most dramatic during the spring snowmelt (April–May) or after heavy autumn rains. The temperature inside remains constant at approximately 8°C, requiring thermal layers even during summer.
Facts & Legends
According to Thracian mythology, the Devil's Throat is the entrance to the Underworld through which Orpheus descended to retrieve his wife, Eurydice. A notable scientific mystery is that objects entering the cave with the river rarely reappear at the exit point several hundred meters away, despite numerous attempts with dyes and trackers, suggesting a complex and largely unexplored underground siphon system.
