Drilon Springs, Pogradec, Albania, Europe
Drilon Springs is a natural water park and protected landscape located near the village of Tushemisht, approximately 4 kilometers east of Pogradec. It serves as the primary discharge point for underground waters originating from Lake Prespa, which filter through the limestone massif of the Dry Mountain to emerge as a series of artesian springs.
Visual Characteristics
The site is defined by crystal-clear, slow-moving water channels surrounded by dense riparian vegetation, including weeping willows, poplars, and decorative reeds. The water depth in the main channels varies from 1 to 3 meters, featuring a vibrant green hue due to underwater flora and algae. White swans and ducks are permanently resident in the central ponds.
Location & Access Logistics
The springs are situated along the SH64 national road, 4.5km east of Pogradec city center. Access is possible via local bus lines running between Pogradec and Tushemisht, or by taxi. A designated paved parking area is available at the park entrance. The site is 1km west of the North Macedonian border crossing at Qafë Plloçë.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Geologically, the springs are part of a karst system where water travels from the higher-elevation Lake Prespa through subterranean galleries. Historically, the site served as the preferred summer residence for former Albanian leader Enver Hoxha; his former villa remains on the grounds. The area is classified as a Monument of Nature.
Key Highlights & Activities
Flat-bottomed wooden boat tours are available through the narrow water channels. Walking is permitted on a network of timber bridges and paved paths encircling the springs. Fishing for the endemic Koran trout is strictly regulated but remains a focal point of the adjacent specialized restaurants.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The park features multiple restaurants and cafes integrated into the landscape. Public restrooms are available within the restaurant complexes. Benches and shaded areas are distributed along the walking paths. Full 4G and 5G cellular coverage is available throughout the site. There are small kiosks selling local crafts and snacks at the main entrance.
Best Time to Visit
The springs are best visited between May and October for optimal greenery and boat accessibility. Late afternoon provides the most balanced lighting for photography, as the surrounding trees minimize harsh shadows. During the winter months, the site remains ice-free due to the constant 10-12°C temperature of the spring water.
Facts & Legends
The site was once a high-security "forbidden zone" during the communist era, reserved exclusively for the political elite. A local myth suggests that the springs have no bottom, though geological surveys confirm the basin sits on a solid limestone floor. It is a specific local tip to visit the "Secret Garden" section behind the main villa for the highest concentration of endemic water plants.
