Jiefangbei Square is situated in the geographical center of Chongqing. It is approximately 3 kilometers from the Yangtze River ferry terminals. The Jiefangbei Monument was originally constructed in 1940 as the "Spirit of National Liberation Monument" to commemorate the victory over Japanese invaders. It was renamed Jiefangbei (Liberation Monument) in 1950. The area itself is part of the urban development of Chongqing, built on the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers.
