Memorial Complex Srebrenica-Potočari, Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Europe
The Srebrenica-Potočari Memorial and Cemetery for the Victims of the 1995 Genocide is a commemorative site located in Potočari, approximately 6 km north of Srebrenica and 110 km east of Tuzla. It serves as the final resting place for over 6,000 identified victims and functions as a research and educational center regarding the events of July 1995.
Visual Characteristics
The complex is divided into two main sections: the cemetery and the memorial room. The cemetery features thousands of uniform white marble headstones (nišani) arranged in a vast, open semi-circle on a grassy slope. Across the main road, the memorial room is housed in a former industrial battery factory-a massive, grey concrete and steel structure with high ceilings and preserved industrial decay, symbolizing the site’s history as a UN base.
Location & Access Logistics
The site is situated on the R-453 regional road connecting Srebrenica to Bratunac. From Tuzla, access is via the M-18 and M-19.2 highways, typically a 2.5-hour drive. There is no direct train service; visitors generally arrive via private vehicle or organized bus tours departing from Tuzla or Sarajevo. A large paved parking area for cars and buses is located directly adjacent to the battery factory.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The memorial was officially opened in 2003 on the site of the former UN Dutchbat headquarters. It was established to commemorate the more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys killed during the Srebrenica genocide. The site is located in the Drina River valley, characterized by rolling hills and temperate forest, though the immediate area is heavily modified for commemorative use.
Key Highlights & Activities
The "Wall of Names" is a curved stone structure inscribed with the names of 8,372 victims. Visitors can enter the Memorial Room (Spomen soba) in the battery factory to view permanent photographic exhibitions and short documentary films. Every July 11th, a collective funeral and burial ceremony is held for newly identified remains recovered from mass graves.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The complex includes a documentation center, a library, and a prayer space (Musalla). Public restrooms are located near the main entrance and the museum section. There is very little shade in the cemetery area, but the battery factory remains cool. Mobile signal (4G) is functional throughout the site. There are no food vendors inside the memorial, but small shops are located in the surrounding Potočari village.
Best Time to Visit
The site is open year-round, but visiting during the spring or autumn provides the most temperate weather for walking the extensive grounds. For photography, late afternoon light emphasizes the rows of white headstones against the green landscape. Visitors should be aware that July 11th is extremely crowded with tens of thousands of attendees.
Facts & Legends
The battery factory walls still contain original graffiti left by UN peacekeepers in 1995, which has been preserved as a historical artifact of the international community's presence during the conflict.
