Mount Korobaba | Ovalau

Mount Korobaba is a prominent volcanic peak located on the southeastern coast of Viti Levu, near the town of Lami. It is the highest point in the Suva area, reaching an elevation of approximately 429m (1,407ft).

Visual Characteristics

The mountain is a jagged, forest-clad peak that overlooks Suva Harbour. The trail traverses diverse ecological zones, beginning in lowland secondary forest and transitioning into primary tropical rainforest. The summit provides 360-degree panoramic views of the Suva peninsula, the Laucala Bay, the Rewa Delta, and the distant islands of Beqa and Kadavu on clear days.

Location & Access Logistics

The mountain is situated in the Lami district, approximately 10km west of Suva's central business district.

Access: The trailhead is located behind the Fiji Cement factory (Pacific Cement) in Lami. Permission from the factory security is typically required to pass through their grounds to reach the start of the path.

Transit: Accessible via local bus or taxi from Suva to Lami Town, followed by a short walk to the cement factory.

Trekking: A moderate-to-strenuous hike. The ascent takes approximately 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on fitness and trail conditions. The path is often steep, muddy, and heavily eroded in sections.

Infrastructure & Amenities

There is no infrastructure on the mountain.

Facilities: No restrooms, water stations, or shelters. Hikers must be self-sufficient.

Trail Condition: The path is largely unmarked and can be obscured by rapid vegetation growth. It is recommended to hike in groups or with someone familiar with the route.

Safety: The terrain is exceptionally slippery after rain. Sturdy footwear with high traction is mandatory.

Signal: 4G/5G cellular signal is generally strong throughout the ascent due to the mountain's proximity to the Suva urban center and telecommunications towers on nearby ridges.
