Public transport options are limited; however, bus route 823 operates from the city to the base of the summit road, requiring a 2.5km walk uphill to the summit.

Mount Lofty is part of the Mount Lofty Ranges, an ancient geological formation composed primarily of sedimentary rock dating back to the Proterozoic era. The summit structure, including the observation tower, was constructed in the 1910s to provide a vantage point for visitors.
