Address: The National Military Cemetery is situated along the Northern side of Airport Road (Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Road), approximately 10 km from central Abuja and 4 km from the National Sports Stadium, at the western end of Constitution Avenue and Independence Avenue.

Visiting Information: The cemetery is permanently staffed by a detachment of the Nigerian Military, ensuring its upkeep and security. Visitors can access the site during daylight hours.

Historical Context

Establishment: The original memorial, known as the Abuja Memorial, was erected to commemorate Nigerian casualties from the First World War.

Relocation and Reconstruction: In 1978, the Nigerian government relocated the Lagos Memorial and the Nigeria Memorial to form a new Nigerian National Memorial at Tafewa Balewa Square in Lagos. Subsequently, in 1989, this structure was dismantled to facilitate the construction of a new memorial in Abuja, leading to the establishment of the current Abuja Memorial within the National Military Cemetery.

Features of the Memorial

Commemorative Purpose: The Abuja Memorial honors over 1,500 members of the Nigeria Regiment and Carrier Corps who perished during the World Wars.

Design and Structure: The memorial is integrated within the National Military Cemetery, which houses the graves of numerous Nigerian soldiers.

Royal Recognition: In November 2018, Prince Charles visited the National Military Cemetery to lay a wreath in honor of the fallen Nigerian soldiers, underscoring the historical ties and shared sacrifices between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
