Nossa Senhora da Nazaré Chapel, Nazare, Portugal, Europe
The Ermida da Memória (Chapel of Memory) is a small, square-plan religious monument located on the extreme western edge of the Sítio cliff in Nazaré, Portugal. It marks the exact spot of the 12th-century miracle that led to the founding of the town's religious cult.
Visual Characteristics
The chapel is characterized by its diminutive size and white-plastered walls topped by a distinctive blue and white tiled pyramid-shaped dome. The interior is entirely lined with 18th-century azulejos (ceramic tiles) depicting the legend of Dom Fuas Roupinho and the apparition of the Virgin Mary. It features a small, low-vaulted entrance and a single stone altar.
Location & Access Logistics
The site is positioned at the westernmost point of the Largo de Nossa Senhora da Nazaré, approximately 50 meters from the Miradouro do Suberco. Access is primarily via the Ascensor da Nazaré from the beach level or via the EN242 road. Pedestrian access is flat and paved from the main Sítio square, and it is located on the direct walking route to the Nazare-lighthouse_nazare" class="underline">Nazaré Lighthouse.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The chapel was built in 1182 by the nobleman Dom Fuas Roupinho as a gesture of gratitude for his life being saved. It was constructed over a small cave where a sacred statue of the Black Madonna had been hidden since the 8th century. The structure rests on a Jurassic limestone promontory that overlooks the Atlantic Ocean from a height of 110 meters.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors can enter the chapel to view the intricate tile work and the small crypt-like lower level. It serves as a primary photography subject due to its isolated position on the cliff edge. A small window in the floor of the chapel provides a view into the original cave where the statue was historically kept.
Infrastructure & Amenities
There are no amenities inside the tiny structure, but the surrounding Sítio district provides public restrooms and 5G cellular coverage within 50 meters. The area immediately outside the chapel is a paved pedestrian zone with stone benches. Food vendors and souvenir shops are located in the adjacent main square.
Best Time to Visit
The best time for photography is at sunset, as the chapel is silhouetted against the Atlantic horizon. The interior is best viewed during midday when sunlight illuminates the blue tiles through the small entrance. Visiting in the early morning avoids the tourist crowds that arrive via the funicular after 10:00.
Facts & Legends
According to the Legend of Nazaré, Dom Fuas Roupinho was chasing a deer in a thick fog when the animal jumped off the cliff; as his horse followed, he called to the Virgin Mary, and the horse stopped instantly at the abyss. A hoofprint carved into a rock outside the chapel is claimed by local tradition to be the physical mark left by the horse during the miracle.
