Tree of Hippocrates, Kos, Greece, Europe

The Tree of Hippocrates is an ancient oriental plane tree (Platanus orientalis) situated in Plateia Platanou (Plane Tree Square) in Kos Town. According to local tradition, it is the site where Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, taught his students the art of healing over 2,400 years ago.

Visual Characteristics

The tree features a massive, hollowed trunk with a circumference of approximately 12 meters. Due to its extreme age and deteriorating core, the heavy branches are supported by a complex system of metal scaffolding and scaffolding columns. The crown is wide and provides significant shade to the surrounding square. The bark is deeply textured and scarred, characteristic of centenarian plane trees.

Location & Access Logistics

The tree is located in the center of Kos Town, directly in front of the Castle of the Knights (Nerantzia) and adjacent to the Gazi Hassan Pasha Mosque. It is a 2-minute walk from the Mandraki Harbor. The site is a public pedestrian area and is accessible 24/7 without a fee. The nearest parking is located at the harbor or the municipal lot near the Town Hall.

Historical & Ecological Origin

While the legend links the tree to Hippocrates (5th century BCE), the current specimen is estimated by arborists to be approximately 500 years old. It is likely a descendant of the original tree that stood on the same spot. The site was once part of the ancient city's center, near the agora. Over centuries, the ground level has risen, leaving the base of the tree slightly below the modern street grade.

Key Highlights & Activities

Observation and photography are the primary activities. Visitors can view the ancient stone sarcophagus and the Ottoman-era fountain nearby, which utilized water from the springs of the Asklepion. In the summer, the square is a site for cultural readings of the Hippocratic Oath.

Infrastructure & Amenities

The square is paved and level, making it accessible for mobility-impaired visitors. Benches are positioned around the perimeter. Numerous cafes and retail shops are located within 50 meters. 5G and 4G mobile signals are strong. Public restrooms are available in the municipal buildings nearby.

Best Time to Visit

Early morning is optimal for photography to avoid the crowds from cruise ship excursions. The tree is best appreciated during the summer months (June–September) when it is in full leaf, providing a cool microclimate in the square.

Facts & Legends

The tree is considered a botanical monument. Seeds and cuttings from this tree have been gifted to medical schools and institutions worldwide (including the National Institutes of Health in the USA) to symbolize the continuity of medical ethics. A local legend claims that the hollow trunk once served as a hiding place for resistance fighters during various periods of occupation.
