Iloilo City, Philippines, Asia
Iloilo City serves as the "Worthy City of the South" and the regional center of the Western Visayas. It functions as a critical educational and medical hub, characterized by its preserved Spanish and American colonial architecture and its status as the "Culinary Capital of the Philippines" (UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy).
Historical Timeline
The city was a thriving textile center in the 18th century, known as the "Textile Capital of the Philippines." It was the last Spanish stronghold in the country to surrender to Filipino revolutionaries in 1898. The primary event shaping its current urban form was the 2007 opening of the Iloilo International Airport and the subsequent redevelopment of the old Mandurriao airport site into the Iloilo Business Park, which shifted the city’s economic center toward a modern high-rise district.
Demographics & Population
The population is approximately 485,000 (2024 estimate). The demographic is predominantly Hiligaynon-speaking (Ilonggo). As a major academic center with over 30 universities, the city has a high concentration of youth and professionals. The median age is 25 years.
Urban Layout & Key Districts
The city is organized around seven districts. Jaro functions as the religious and aristocratic center; Molo is the historical "Athens of the Philippines" known for its intellectuals; Mandurriao serves as the modern commercial and BPO hub; and City Proper remains the administrative and traditional trade zone.

Iloilo City is the only city in the Philippines to have a "Feminist Church" (Molo Church), so named because all the saints depicted in the interior are female. Local legend states that the bells of Jaro Cathedral once rang so loudly they could be heard in Negros, while a verified historical fact is that Iloilo was the first city outside of Manila to have a foreign consulate and a golf course.
