The pagoda is a white, dome-shaped structure constructed from concrete. It stands approximately 28 meters (92 feet) in height. The base of the stupa is circular, and it is surrounded by a walkway. Four smaller stupas are situated at the cardinal points around the main structure. The exterior is unadorned, emphasizing its minimalist design.

Public transport options include local buses traveling along the A4 route; disembark at the junction for the pagoda road and walk the remaining distance.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Construction of the Ampara Peace Pagoda commenced in the late 1970s and was completed in 1980. It was built under the guidance of Nichidatsu Fujii, the founder of the Nipponzan-Myōhōji order, as a symbol of peace. The site was chosen for its relative tranquility and accessibility within the Ampara district.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can circumambulate the main stupa on the designated pathway. Meditation is permitted within the pagoda complex. Observation of the architectural design and the surrounding landscape is a primary activity. Photography is allowed.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Basic restroom facilities are available near the entrance. There are no food vendors directly on-site; however, eateries are present in the nearby town of Ampara. Shade is limited to the covered walkways around the stupa. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available.

Best Time to Visit

The best time of day for photography is during the early morning or late afternoon when the sunlight is softer, providing even illumination on the white structure. The months of December to March offer the most favorable weather conditions with lower rainfall and moderate temperatures. There are no tide-dependent activities.
