AquaCity Poprad, Poprad, Slovakia, Europe

AquaCity Poprad is an ecological recreational complex located in the northern part of Poprad, utilizing geothermal energy from underground boreholes to heat pools and power facilities.

Visual Characteristics

The complex consists of modernist glass-fronted halls and outdoor stainless steel pools. The dominant features are three outdoor thermal pools with blue backlighting and the "Blue Diamond" indoor pools, which feature integrated swim-up bars. The interior design follows a high-tech aesthetic utilizing chrome, glass, and multi-colored LED lighting.

Location & Access Logistics

The resort is located at Športová 1397/1, approximately 1.5km northeast of the Poprad-Tatry main railway station. Access is via the I/66 road. Free parking is available for over 500 vehicles. Local transport is served by bus lines 1 and 7 at the "AquaCity" stop.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Opened in 2004 on the site of a former municipal swimming bath, the resort utilizes water extracted from a depth of 1,300 meters, reaching the surface at 49°C. AquaCity has received the "World’s Leading Green Resort" award for its carbon footprint reduction through the use of heat exchangers and solar energy.

Key Highlights & Activities

Pools: 13 outdoor and indoor pools with water temperatures ranging from 28°C to 38°C.

Wellness: The "Fire & Water Wellness & Spa" covers 1,600 m², including saunas, whirlpools, and a snow cave.

Cryocentre: Facilities for whole-body and local cryotherapy at temperatures down to -120°C.

Laser Show: Nightly multimedia programs held in the Blue Sapphire pools.

Infrastructure & Amenities

The area includes three hotels (Mountain View, Seasons, Riverside), the High Tatras restaurant, various bars, and a fitness center. 5G cellular coverage and Wi-Fi are available throughout. The infrastructure is fully wheelchair accessible, featuring modern elevators and hydraulic lifts for pool entry.

Best Time to Visit

Due to the thermal water, the facility is effective year-round. For photography, evening hours are optimal to capture the lighting design of the pools against the backdrop of the High Tatras. The lowest visitor density occurs on weekdays during morning hours (09:00 – 12:00).

Facts & Legends

AquaCity holds records for ecological operation, saving thousands of tons of CO2 emissions annually. A local technical highlight is the saltwater pool, designed to simulate Adriatic marine conditions within the Sub-Tatra basin environment.
